Returning to work after the Christmas holidays can be tricky enough. While the festive season offers a chance to relax, the shift back to work routines—sitting at a desk, repetitive or physically demanding tasks—can lead to aches and pains. If you're experiencing stiffness or discomfort, you're not alone! Here's why it happens and what you can do to prevent it.
Why Aches and Pains Occur Post-Holiday
Reduced activity: we love lounging on the couch or indulging in extended periods of rest, however these can can reduce muscle tone and flexibility.
Poor posture: Holiday activities, from slouching on the sofa to sitting awkwardly for board games or long holiday meals, are often not the best for our posture!
Stress and tension: The rush of returning to deadlines and schedules can increase muscle tension, especially in the neck and shoulders.
3 Tips to Avoid Post-Holiday Pains
Ease back into your routine: Don’t dive straight into long workdays or heavy lifting. Incorporate gentle stretches into your day to loosen tight muscles (or come along to Stretch & Mobility Class!)
Set up your workspace: Ensure your desk and chair are ergonomically aligned. A supportive chair and proper screen height can make a big difference - talk to Dr. Matt at your next appointment about your particular set up.
Stay active and hydrated: Incorporate short walks or simple exercises into your day, and drink plenty of water to keep your joints and muscles happy.
